Like their football counterparts earlier in the day in Philipstown, St. Kevin’s Camogie team experienced a narrow defeat from their Trim visitors in the second round of the Leinster League. A quick goal from Trim in the first couple of minutes seemed to rock the Philipstown defenses and dictate the tone of the game for the first half. In an attempt to interrupt Trim’s running flow of opportunities, Gemma Murray opened up the scoreboard for the Kevin’s scoring a nice point 15 minutes into the game. However, Trim were quick to respond with a point of their own just moments later.

After which possession seemed to remain equally in the midfield, and continued as a low-scoring affair. All in all, Trim’s defensive line often proved too tough for the Philipstown side to penetrate, and Trim managed to achieve a higher conversion rate for the opportunities given to them throughout the first half in particular.

In traditional Kevin’s style, the girls rallied and made a fantastic comeback in the second half. Leah Cunningham and Gemma Murray both performed the role of free-taker both scoring a point apiece from their free opportunities. Leah proved to be a powerhouse in the midfield, bringing the play as close to the opponent’s end as possible. As the minutes counted down it looked like the girls might scrape a late win. However, a late injury to Lucy Sheridan meant it was not to be on the day.

The team also saw a welcome return to Roisin Maguire, who played in the forward line. This will be the team’s third year entering the Leinster League, and for many of Barry Leonard’s young team, will be the start of playing teams outside the county, wearing the red and black. The team showed an impressive tenacity for what proved to be an extremely physical game.

The team will go on to the next round of the league 26th/27th March. Fixture to be confirmed at a later date.
