Oliver Sands- An Appreciation

Oliver Sands, the eldest son of Mr. & Mrs. Peter Sands, Dromin Junction, died unexpectedly at the tender age of 23 on the 7th February 1969.  Oliver was described as an “extremely popular, obliging and able person.”

Oliver was educated at Stabannon N.S, Ardee De La Salle school and went on to further education in St. Patrick’s Agricultural College, Monaghan, where he graduated with the hopes of becoming an agricultural inspector. A job which he secured with the Dept. of Agriculture a few short weeks before he passed away. Oliver taught for a brief period in Dromin School covering a maternity leave, and at one point taught three of his younger siblings, Terence, Aine & Rita.
Oliver was a willing worker in parochial activities of all sorts and was an organiser of much ability as he showed in the manner in which he packed the Parochial Hall, Dunleer in aid of the Dromin Boys Club the year before he died. As secretary, and leading light of the Dromin  Club he had big plans for its future.
Having spoken with a couple of people who partook in the club, they described him as the perfect role model a young person could have. Oliver was also a keen supporter of St. Kevin’s G.F.C having turned out with the minor and Division II teams over a number of years. The activities of the Dromin tug-o-war club also interested him greatly.

The shock of Oliver’s death resonated with all of his neighbours, and still to this day find it hard to recall the many memories they have of him without feeling the weight of grief as acute as if it were yesterday.  He lived life to the fullest and valued every minute he had on this earth.
