7 points to the good, the usual magic number when leading, with less than 10 minutes to play, St. Kevins were cruising towards their second victory of the season. But late goals left Thomas Macnamee’s side shaking their head wondering how they left the game with nothing to show.

For 60 minutes, the Philipstown side played really well. With immaculate weather for football, the quality of both attacking and defending play was something to be proud of. But a lack of concentration, and ultimately experience, showed as they were pipped at the death. St. Kevins started strong with Lee Crosbie setting the tone for his side. He kicked 1-3 in the opening 14 minutes, with a strong run and tidy finish to the near post for his goal. Direct balls to Tom Matthews and Ronan Sands seemed to be the plan for St. Kevins with both earning multiple frees in the opening half hour.

It was that tactic that got St. Kevins their second goal when direct play from Cameron Maher found Cian Callan who fired low with too much venom for the trailing Barrs defender to keep out.

Shane Meade, probably St. Kevins strongest performer, and Karl Martin kicked nice scores and linked up well on the right flank throughout the game. Jack Butterly’s presence in the square caused St. Kevins a lot of problems throughout. He kept his side in the game going into half time with the scores at 2-8 to 0-9.

The second half was a lot more even and tense, as the teams were nearly at a deadlock throughout. Lee Crosbie and Evan Maher, who came to life in the second half, carried the Philipstown charge winning kickouts for fun. But a lack of concentration whilst trying to see the game out resulted in a Finbarr’s goal which completely seemed to knock any stuffing out of Macnamee’s side.

With credit to Naomh Fionbarra, they battled right to the end always hoping they’d get a chance to nick the game. A hopeful, long ball in fooled Josh Finlay and looped into the back of the net.

Though Finlay shouldn’t be too upset with his performance, he stopped two certain goals in the first half including a wonder save at point blank range from Butterly.

There was not enough time left to muster an attack to get something from the game, but leading the tie throughout the Kevins will be extremely disappointed and almost confused with how the game finished. They travel to The Grove in Castlebellingham next Saturday to put things right against The O’Connells.

Team List: Josh Finlay, Eoin McKenna, Finbarr Lynch, Dylan Maher, Shane Meade, Cameron Maher, Darren McMullan, Brian Callaghan, Evan Maher, Karl Martin(0-1), Lee Crosbie(1-8), Keelan Maher, Cian Callan(1-0), Tom Matthews(0-2), Ronan Sands. Conor Rogers for Brian Callaghan.
