U17 FIRST ROUND CHAMPIONSHIP STRUGGLE AT HOME

St. Kevin’s (0-9) Naomh Finbarra (0-14)

Our U17 football team hosted the first round in the Championship, last Thursday night against visitors Naomh Finbarra. The first half was extremely competitive, however with an extra player in defence the lads were unable to convert their scoring opportunities. Joe McArdle performed as freetaker on the night along with Robbie Matthews, taking some brilliant attempts from impressive distances.  Similarly to last year Emmet Byrne and Donnacha Boylan were stalwarts in the defensive line alongside Paidi McCabe and John Callaghan who managed to send many scoring opportunities wide. Joe McArdle had multiple point blank blocks much to his opponents dismay.

Finn Carter and Caoimhin Prout worked like trojans, Caoimhin breaking impressive balls from kickouts and Finn who consistently brought the ball up the field with some well timed attacking force.

Robbie Matthews opened the second half with three points of his own in quick succession levelling the game since the beginning scores of the game. Ten minutes later another  free point from Robbie had the lads ahead and to the spectating crowd appeared as if the game was for the Kevin’s taking. The team were dealt a blow minutes before the final whistle when one of the Kevin’s players received a second yellow card resulting in his dismissal off the pitch—unfortunately leaving 14 lads to minimise the damage and slow down the growing gap in the scoreline.

Although the Kevin’s had relatively even possession and even at times were the more impressive attacking force on the field, however, they failed to convert as much of their scoring opportunities as their visiting opponents. There was nothing between the ability and determination of both teams, however, the Finbarr’s had the edge in the fluidity of their simple passes and proved to be more accurate.

Scorers on the night were Robbie Matthews, Jacob Finlay, Ciaran King, Joe McArdle, and Jack Stokes.

Team List: Diarmuid Deffely, Christian Leddy, Caoimhin Prout, Emmet Byrne, Niall Gregory, Jack Stokes (0-2), Donnacha Boylan, Joe McArdle (0-2), David Leddy, Finn Carter, Robbie Matthews (0-4), John Callaghan, Jacob Finlay (0-2), Paidi McCabe, Ciaran King (0-1). Subs: Conor Doheny.
