SUCCESS ON THE SQUARE FOR MATTHEWS

Two goals just before the half time break helped St Kevins make it 4 wins on the bounce after seeing off Roche Emmets in Phillipstown on Saturday night.

Team List: Danny Crosbie, Dylan Maher, Finbarr Lynch, Shane Meade, Karl Martin, Cameron Maher (0-3) (3f), Darren McMullan, Evan Maher(0-1), Seanie Crosbie, Keelan Maher(0-1), TJ Doheny(0-1), Eoin McKenna, Aaron Khan, Tom Matthews (2-1), Lee Crosbie (0-1)  Conor Rogers for Evan Maher, Patrick Clarke for Eoin McKenna.

The eighth round of the Division 2 league saw the welcome return of Aaron Khan, and TJ Doheny. Evan Maher opened the scoreboard for the Kevin’s, followed in short succession by TJ Doheny and Lee Crosbie who scored a point a piece.

Roche Emmets made two substitutions in that first half, and they had an impact as they managed to close that gap to a single point at 0-5 to 0-4 heading into the last 5 minutes of the first half. A Matthews on the square has  previously resulted in success for Philipstown and last night was no different when a quickfire 2-1 from Tom Mathews and a Cameron Maher free, saw the Kevins take a nine point lead into the half time break. Halftime Score: 2-7 St. Kevin’s 0-3 Roche Emmets.

The second half was a different affair for the Philipstown men, with a minor head injury to Seanie Crosbie which took him out of action, and an impressive comeback from the Roche Emmets who managed to acquire seven points with little response. Keelan Maher was the only scorer for the Kevin’s in the second half.

Despite this, St Kevins deserve immense credit for a battling second performance, which saw them grind out an impressive victory in difficult weather conditions, from Dylan Maher at corner back, to Evan Maher and Seanie Crosbie in midfield, right through to double goal scorer Tom Mathews, St Kevins worked hard for this victory against a Roche Emmets side who have enjoyed several impressive victories themselves this season.

St. Kevin’s remains in the fourth position on the league table, with just one point difference from the next two teams, Dundalk Young Irelands and the O’Raghallaigh’s. Their next round is Saturday 18th June against the Dundalk Young Irelands in Paire Eire Og.

Full Time Score: 2-8 St Kevins 0-11 Roche Emmets
